Farm Ponds—8/20/2012

Question: With the current drought, I’d like to construct a pond for my farm, but I’ve been told that my soil is unsuitable. What can I do?

Answer: According to the National Climatic Data Center’s July 17 report, the United States is experiencing the most severe drought, with the highest percentage of land affected, in over 60 years. Most parts of the country are affected by moderate to exceptional drought conditions, particularly in the midwest and plains regions. During such times, many of us think more seriously about constructing man-made ponds, since farm ponds are one of the most reliable and economical sources of water. Farm ponds serve a variety of purposes, including water for livestock and for irrigation, fish production, field and orchard spraying, fire protection, wildlife habitats and erosion control.

Your land’s soil quality will definitely affect pond water retention. Compacted clay soils that minimize seepage are the best choice for a natural pond. If your soil contains gravel, sand, limestone, or shale, a pond can be successfully constructed and maintained by using a man-made liner. Such a liner, properly installed and maintained, is 100% impervious to leaks and seepage.

BTL offers a variety of liners that are suitable for ponds and lakes. Whether you desire the largest single panels possible in order to minimize seams, or you’re looking for superior UV-resistance and an extended material warranty, we have products that are ideal. Both our reinforced polyethylene (RPE) and reinforced polypropylene (RPP) liners are fish and plant safe, flexible, strong, lightweight and economical. Specific product selection is always dictated by site conditions and containment needs, so please don’t hesitate to contact a BTL representative at 800-280-0712 to ask about specific product selection.
